Carlos Tevez celebrating after scoring against Blackburn Rovers last night

Argentine international Carlos Tevez sunk Paul Ince and Blackburn Rovers’ semi-final dream in the Carling Cup last night.

Carlos Tevez staked a strong claim for a first-team spot as he put four past Blackburn Rovers to send Manchester United through the Carling Cup semi-finals.

Sir Alex Ferguson offered a start to Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster, who made a highly anticipated first team debut at Old Trafford.

United were also without one of their biggest goal threats this evening as winger Cristiano Ronaldo was suspended following his handball at the weekend.

Carlos Tevez has often found himself benched this season, out of favour, and outcast, but the Argentine forward will have done his first team credentials no harm with a stunning performance in the Old Trafford firm’s attack.

Tevez scored an incredible four goals, one of which was from the penalty spot, and the game finished 5-3 to send visiting Blackburn Rovers crashing out of the Carling Cup and raised further questions regarding Paul Ince’s future as full time manager.

Paul Ince was a key member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s team between 1989 and 1995 but is not having such an easy time of it as a manager at Blackburn.

Ince steps out at Old Trafford as a manager for the first time with his team sitting second bottom of the Premier League on a winless run of nine league matches.

The likes of Nani, Darron Gibson, Rafael Da Silva and Rodrigo Possebon failed to impress as they struggled past QPR with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford in the previous round.

But United’s depth of reserves means Ferguson can also field significantly more experienced operators like Carlos Tevez, Jonny Evans, Tomasz Kuszczak and Anderson.

Goals from Argentine international Carlos Tevez, who headed in from close-range, and then Luis Nani, who took advantage of a Tevez assist, ensured that the home side went into the break two goals to the good.

Within three minutes of the restart though South African hotshot Benni McCarthy, who had only come on as a half-time measure, struck home and proved to be an inspired substitution from troubled manager and former United player Paul Ince.

Any comeback was short-lived though as Tevez restored United’s two goal cushion with a penalty conversion after being fouled by Martin Olssen.

He then sealed his hat-trick (his first in United colours) minutes later with a tap-in, increasing the scoreline to 4-1.

The Rovers tried to force a comeback in the dying stages of the game, as Englishman Matt Derbyshire took advantage of a McCarthy pass to get his first of the night, and Benni McCarthy brought the deficit back to one goal when Derbyshire returned his earlier favour.

Tevez though capped a fantastic and prolific performance, and guaranteed the match ball by powerfully striking again to seal a goal glut of a day, 5-3 to United.

Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted that his Argentine forward Tevez has played his way back into contention with a performance that saw him claim the match ball.

Four goal Carlos Tevez is the hero of the day in a thrilling Carling Cup encounter at Old Trafford.

“Carlos Tevez had a marvellous performance. It makes my job more difficult but it makes the club stronger,” he told MUTV.

“I am pretty pleased with the performance. Some of our football was good. There was great invention in our play. The goal with Anderson and Tevez was sensational. We created a lot of chances and I am satisfied at scoring five goals at home.”

“You don’t want to be losing goals and we lost three and that was not a fair reflection on Ben Foster because he had two great saves early in the match which kept us in the game to be honest.”

It was the second time in as many games that Tevez kept United’s cup hopes alive, as he netted from the spot in their 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers in the previous round.

“I’m very pleased to have scored four goals because it’s the first time I have done that in my career,” he said in The Sun.

Dimitar Berbatov’s summer switch to Old Trafford has played its part, and it has been reported that Tevez could leave the Red Devils at the end of the season – or even sooner, although Sir Alex Ferguson has rubbished that idea.

Nonetheless, the former West Ham man’s situation is precarious, and he was delighted to stretch his legs and help United put on a top-drawer display yesterday evening.

“I was really looking forward to this game because I haven’t been playing much,” the Argentine forward said.

“But our performance showed we can play Champions League standard football in any cup competition.”

Real Madrid and Inter Milan are among a slew of elite clubs who have been linked with Tevez recently.

Manchester United now progress to the semi final of the competition.
