Mnchester United - the new World Club Cup Champion

Manchester United won the prestigious World Club Cup Tournament defeating Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito 1-0. Man Utd won it for the first time in their entire history. They are the first English team to win this trophy.

Jubilant striker Wayne Rooney rescued the red devils scoring the one and only crucial goal in the final. In the second half Mn Utd played with ten men. Despite having ten man they managed to grab the victory over the Copa Libertadores champions.

The England striker scored in the 73rd minute after being set up by Cristiano Ronaldo, with United rallying to victory after Nemanja Vidic was needlessly sent off.

Man Utd were the favorite team in the final. It was a remarkable day for them. They started the match strongly and continued the domination over the opposition with their play.

But it was the South American club, who started the early attack. The shot of the defender Jairo Campos was wide at an open goal in the fourth minute.

After that Red Devils were starting to dominate the match. With the skill of Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo and the good passing of Rooney, Man Utd were looking very strong. As the time was passing, the Man Utd were keeping the ball more into their feet, while the South American side waere puzzling in the field.

In the 19th minute great work from Ronaldo down the left wing opened up an opportunity for Carlos Tevez, but Cevallos saved the header of the Argentine.

The Red Devils were completely on top at this stage. At that time their ball possession reading was 68% compared to only 32% for Liga. United pushed forward in numbers as they looked to make the most of their territorial advantage.

In the 34th minute a brilliant combination involving Rooney and Tevez almost culminated in Ji Sung Park finding the back of the net, but the South Korean international had his effort saved.

Liga showed some fight in the final ten minutes of the first half, greatly due to the influence of Argentine midfielder Damian Manso, who was by far their best player. But that was not good enough to puzzle the Red Devils.

United got off to the worst possible start in the second half. Four minutes into the second half United were reduced to ten men, when Nemanja Vidic was given Red Card for elbowing Liga striker Claudio Bieler.

The Serb gets an automatic one-match UEFA ban which means he will miss United’s last 16 Champions League first leg tie against Inter Milan in February.

Ferguson sacrificed Tevez, bringing on Jonathan Evans as his replacement.

After the sending off Liga de Quito began to play to their true potential, and the Ecuadorians tried to surprise United down the wings, with the brilliant work of Manso and the speed of Luis Bolanos.

But United still looked dangerous each time they moved forward. Despite being down to 10 men United knuckled down, with Ronaldo troubling Cevallos with a long range strike and Rooney getting a header on target.

However, United broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute when Cristiano Ronaldo fed Rooney, and the striker made no mistake with a well-placed shot that got the better of Cevallos.

The goal gave United some breathing space, but they were in for a complicated final twenty minutes, as the Ecuadorians piled heavy pressure on their goal, as they looked for an equalizer.

In the 89th minute Manso almost drew Liga level, but his sensational long-range effort was tipped over the bar by a full stretch Van der Sar.

Manchester United held on, and claimed the FIFA Club World Cup for the first time. The Red Devils proved superior to their opponents for great part of the encounter and were well worth their title triumph.

Rooney’s goal gave them an unprecedented treble this year, with the English and European champions now able to call themselves world champions, helping silence those who have criticised the long trip here.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men also became the first British team to win the tournament, putting them alongside Italy’s AC Milan and Brazil’s Internacional and Sao Paulo.
