The Atletico Madrid striker insists that Uruguay are not afraid of Diego Maradona’s squad, but hopes that teams from South America get as far in the tournament as possible.
After Forlan’s brace led Uruguay to a 3-0 victory over South Africa in their second group match, the team requires only a draw to progress to the knockout stages when they take on Mexico on Tuesday.
With Argentina in control of Group B, Forlan will prefer to defeat Mexico and so that Uruguay win Group A and avoid playing the South American giants.
“We respect them as they respect us, but as South Americans the further we get the better,” Forlan told the Daily Star.
“If we have to face them further down the line, we will do it happily, but for one of us to be eliminated in the last 16 is a waste.”
